Online EQUATIONS

How are variations used exactly? I looked at the help section and did not find anything on the subject. In-game (so far I have only played one game due to the lack of players so I probably missed something important) under the "stuff" tab I found something about variations but could not confirm whether or not I called any. Thank you for your time.

If I recall correctly, my coach told me that there were no variations programmed in this game yet, although the game occasionally refers to a log function.

I believe they are hoping to implement variations by Christmas.
